There is one opening with the Yakima County Public Services Department – County Road – Sunnyside Shop. Position is responsible for operating a motor patrol grader for the purpose of grading gravel roads and plowing snow. Performs routine, preventive maintenance on equipment. Operates 5 and 10-yard dump trucks for the purpose of hauling gravel and other materials. Operates other equipment, as needed, such as roadside mowers and front-end loaders. This recruitment may be used to fill other Road Maintenance Technician – Grader Operator positions within 90 days of the closing of this recruitment.
Essential Job Functions:
Operates a motor patrol grader. Activities include grading and processing gravel roads, snow removal and ditching operations.
Operates a variety of other equipment including, 5-yard dump trucks, 10-yard dump trucks, roadside mowers, front-end loaders, lowboy tractor-trailer and brush chippers.
Performs basic preventive maintenance and service of equipment. Performs traffic control operations and implements work zone safety precautions as a flagger on County roads. Performs other duties as assigned.
Experience & Training: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and four years equipment operation, road maintenance and/or construction experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job. Required: Washington State Class ‘A’ Commercial Drivers License with Air Brakes, Tanker.
This is a Yakima County Independent Local No. 1 Bargaining Unit position.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Work is performed in and around County roadways and requires: driving, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, mobility, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Rated as Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Knowledge of: Comprehensive understanding of road maintenance and construction techniques and standard; basic equipment maintenance; equipment and tools used in road and bridge maintenance; and safety precautions.
Skill in: Operating motor patrol graders, dump trucks, front end loaders, backhoes, and other common road maintenance equipment; performing preventative maintenance on equipment; applying traffic control techniques; using two-way radios and other communication devices; applying customer service techniques; establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships with co-workers; communication, both oral and written sufficient to receive direction and follow direction.
