  • Overview

    There is an Extra Help, Temporary, on-call position open with Yakima County Public Services, Solid Waste.  This position is responsible for performing a variety of routine activities including the operation of maintenance and vehicle equipment and maintaining Solid Waste grounds and facilities. This recruitment may be used to fill extra help, intermittent on-call openings that may occur in the 90 days after closing.

     

     

    Initial screening of applicants will take place on 06/28/18 or when the hiring authority determines a sufficient applicant pool has been established.  Subsequent screenings will take place periodically throughout the recruitment based on the needs of the department. 

    Responsibilities

    Incumbent will perform a variety of routine, manual labor activities based on the work assignment. Assignments may include one or more of the following:

     

    Maintaining Solid Waste buildings, grounds and facilities, such as clearing brush piles, picking up litter, directing traffic, weeding, pruning trees.

     

    Ensures personal and public safety while performing duties. Provides assistance and customer service to system users including explaining rules and regulations, directing traffic and flagging.

     

    Other duties as assigned.

     

    Qualifications

    Education and Experience: High School Diploma or GED and 1 year of relevant experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience to perform the essential duties of the job.

     

    Required:

    Valid WA State Driver’s License and proof of insurance, if requested.

    Successful completion of a criminal and general background information investigations. Occasionally may be asked to handle cash.

     

    Preferred:

    Skills in operating basic hand tools, lawn and facility maintenance machinery and equipment.

    Ability to take direction.

    Skill in working with others.

    Ability to work independently as directed.

    Experience in directing traffic; operating grounds keeping equipment and/or forklift

     

    Equipment Used: Grounds maintenance equipment including lawn mowers, weed eaters, hand and power tools, personal protective equipment, two way radios, passenger/light truck vehicles.

     

    Working Conditions: Environment Demand: exposure to weather, extreme, wet or humid, noise, vibration, atmospheric conditions, moving/mechanical parts. Physical demands: standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, bending, reaching, handling. Minor Physical factors: climbing, balancing, kneeling, crouching, crawling, fingering, feeling, talking, hearing, smelling, visual acuity. Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

     

    Knowledge: Upon entry the applicant must have an understanding of how the workforce operates and   expectations of an employee to arrive on time, come to work prepared and take direction

     

    Skills: Skills in operating basic hand tools, lawn and facility maintenance machinery and equipment. Ability to take direction. Skill in working with others. Ability to work independently as directed. Experience in directing traffic; operating grounds keeping equipment and/or forklift.
