There are two openings with the Yakima County Public Services Solid Waste Division. These positions performs routine maintenance activities including the operation of maintenance and vehicle equipment and maintains the Solid Waste facilities grounds in safe and orderly condition.
This recruitment may be used to fill future Maintenance Worker positions which may occur within 90 days of the posted closing date.
Disposes of waste in a safe and appropriate manner; assesses waste category of materials to be disposed; places waste in appropriate containers for recycling; informs the public regarding proper recycling disposal areas.
Performs a variety of routine activities in maintaining County buildings and facilities including clearing brush piles, picking up litter, performing basic sprinkler, fence and other repair; and shoveling snow. Performs other ground maintenance activities including mowing, trimming, weeding, planting, and pruning trees; May check components of waste processing systems under strict guidelines and procedures.
Operates equipment such as a pick-up truck and forklift. Performs daily pre-start vehicle inspection, operational checks and maintenance activities, reports repairs as needed.
Provides assistance and customer service to system users including explaining program rules and regulations, opening and/or closing facilities, and directing traffic.
Other duties as assigned such as cleaning the recycling center or preparing chemical solutions under direction and safety guidelines.
Education and Experience: High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and one year facility maintenance experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides knowledge, skills and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
Required: Washington State Driver’s License at time of appointment and proof of insurance, if requested. Successful completion of criminal background investigation.
Preferred: Work in a solid waste, recycling, hazardous waste or facilities maintenance environment. Certified Flagger, Certified Forklift Operator, and 24 Hour Hazardous Waste Training.
This is a Teamster’s Bargaining Unit position. As a condition of employment you are required to become a member of the Unit or pay representation fees per the negotiated contract.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements: Work is performed primarily outdoors for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions. Requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing mobility, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Rated as heavy work - exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. May have to deal with potential hazardous material at the landfill or transfer station.
Equipment Operated: Forklift, weed-eater, two-way radio or other means of communication, hand and power tools, vehicles, pumps etc.
Knowledge of: Facilities and grounds maintenance procedures, equipment, materials and techniques; Work planning and time management techniques. Maintenance safety precautions; Basic mechanical, electrical, plumbing and building repair techniques and equipment; and Customer service techniques.
Skills (and abilities) in: Performing routine facility maintenance and grounds keeping activities using hand and power tools, Operating vehicles requiring less than a commercial driver’s license; Directing traffic and using two-way radios; Applying customer service and personal safety methods and techniques; Calculating measurements; Organizing and planning daily work; Oral and written communication sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction; and Establishing and maintaining effective interpersonal relationships at all organizational levels and with the public.
