Overview

There is one opening with Yakima County Public Services, County Road.  This position is responsible for ensuring that the design, installation and maintenance of traffic control devices on County roads are in compliance with accepted standardsThis recruitment may be used to fill other Senior Traffic Engineer positions within 90 days of the closing of this recruitment.

Responsibilities

Assists with the administration, coordination and evaluation of the Traffic Engineering Division by monitoring operations, identifying resources and providing technical expertise; analyzes work load; forecasts future Traffic Operations and Safety Management needs; develops plans and strategies to meet needs; evaluates pending revisions to laws, rules, specifications and traffic control device standards that have an impact on area of responsibility.

 

Evaluates relevant traffic data and recommends plans to promote safety and reduce congestion.

Prepares/reviews plans for the placement of traffic control signals, road signs and other traffic control devices; recommends changes in speed limit and stop sign ordinances; prepares/reviews contracts for street light projects. Assures timely and proper repair and installation of traffic signs and devices to ensure compliance with Federal and State standards; ensures that permanent records of all traffic control signs are maintained; ensures that annual striping and pavement marking programs are adequate to meet Federal and State standards.

 

Meets with citizens regarding complaints and resolves problems within County policies and guidelines.

Responds to inquiries from contractors, public agencies, elected officials, and the general public regarding County traffic control policies, practices and procedures.

 

Exchanges project information with other agencies including towns, cities, counties, state agencies, railroads, and public and private utilities to coordinate county projects and improvements; represents Yakima County at meetings, seminars and workshops to learn of new developments to increase efficiency and reduce costs; attends pre-bid and preconstruction meetings to represent traffic concerns.

 

Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or related Engineering field and Six years engineering experience, including two years in engineering project management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides knowledge, skills, and abilities sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.

 

Equipment Used: Computer and engineering software (must be proficient with a variety of traffic analysis software, roadway lighting software), vehicle, calculator, telephone, fax, copier, camera, measuring equipment and specialized construction monitoring equipment.

 

Working Conditions: Environmental Demands: exposure to weather, multiple work locations, field work. Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work. Physical Demands: sitting, standing, walking, fingering, hearing, smelling, talking, visual acuity.

 

Required:

Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of Washington. Applications will be accepted from registered engineers residing in another state, and appointments of such individuals shall be contingent upon obtaining the Washington State Registration within 6 months of appointment

 

Possession of a valid Washington State driver’s license is required at time of appointment.

 

 

NOTE: This is a Yakima County Clerical, Technical and Professional Employees Group position. As a condition of employment you are required to become a member of the Group or pay representation fees per the negotiated contract.
